My favorite singers: Kim So Hyang


Now, for one of my idols (and they are not idols), here is my most fave at this time (and next time will be an other :v): Kim SoHyang
Kim SoHyang - full lyrical soprano (D3-A6)


You may have seen her in some YouTube video comparing her to Regine Velasaquez,... If you may not, she is a full lyrical soprano with a big vocal range, starting from D3 and up to A6. Here is a video which includes nearly all of her range: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PuuwPXwSnE 

As a Christian singer and the lead singer of the Busan church, SoHyang has great technique especially in the upper register of her voice, C#5 to C#6. She produces great mixed high notes from E5 upwards, with full resonance, a neutral larynx, no strain, no nasality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_xao6byZT0

She also has ability to control and hold her breath really competently, with her 16-second longest note. That enables her to project some impressive vocal runs and powerful stamina in the fifth octave. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEJ3hRS7Mlc

However, she has lots of limitations, too. The first thing is, her vocal timbre and her tone are not good. Sometimes, in her live performances, without any sound-editings, she sounds really metallic and nasal, although she doesn't sing nasally. Some people says that her voice really hurts their ears, because of her high notes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps1TD3JnaHs (That G5 in this perf is really like singing nasally).

Also, her lower register is airy and not developed through years. Her middle-range (including C5, D5) often sounds closed, not as powerful as her upper-range. That is the big difference between her and other great female singers like Mariah Carey, Lara Fabian or Whitney Houston, whose middle-notes are impressive and greatly resonant. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkGnbEOoHxQ

And, her musicianship is not good as well. When singing English songs and middle-range songs that she is not capable of singing comfortably and beautifully, she starts to add lots of high notes and oversings the song. It makes some of her performances really annoying, like this most popular one. Going to C#6 and belting to B5 in a song like this is not a wise choice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx2TvbZDVYU

Still, she is a great trained singer and a powerful vocalist, especially in Asia.
